Consulting a spell caster?

Deuteronomy 18:9-14
“When thou art come into the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found with thee any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one that useth divination, one that practiseth augury, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto Jehovah: and because of these abominations Jehovah thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with Jehovah thy God. For these nations, that thou shalt dispossess, hearken unto them that practise augury, and unto diviners; but as for thee, Jehovah thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.”

It is very common in our society to find people who devote themselves to casting spells for various purposes: attracting someone, being loved, making money, removing evil, achieving success, and so on. These people speak openly (even through the media) about spells, reading the signs of the times, tarot, horoscopes, witchcraft, incantations, and other such things as though they were normal, attributing to God what they supposedly tell people.

“For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken ye to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah.” (Jeremiah 29:8-9)

The Lord forbids consulting these people and abhors those who do such things

“Turn ye not unto them that have familiar spirits, nor unto the wizards; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I am Jehovah your God.” (Leviticus 19:31)

“And the soul that turneth unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto the wizards, to play the harlot after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.” (Leviticus 20:6)

Why?

“For the teraphim have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie; and they have told false dreams, they comfort in vain: therefore they go their way like sheep, they are afflicted, because there is no shepherd.” (Zechariah 10:2)

So it is no surprise that they wander and return to the same things, since

“…Can one blind person guide another? Will they not both fall into the pit?” (Luke 6:39)

People consider this normal and harmless, but the truth is that it draws you in more and more, taking you deeper little by little. That is why the Word of God is clear about these practices… they are an abomination!

Examples in the Bible

The Word of God gives us examples of people who came to a very bad end, and more than that… their actions brought terrible consequences upon their children! Let us look at 2 examples:

Have we read what happened to King Saul and his sons?

“So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah, which he kept not; and also for that he asked counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire [thereby], and inquired not of Jehovah: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14)

“So Saul died, and his three sons; and all his house died together.” (1 Chronicles 10:6)

Have we read what happened to King Manasseh and his sons?

“He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the children of Israel. He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down, erected altars to Baal, and made an image of Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel had done. He worshiped all the host of heaven and served those things.

He also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said: I will place my name in Jerusalem. He built altars to all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. He made his son pass through fire, practiced soothsaying, interpreted omens, and appointed spell casters and diviners, multiplying his evil deeds in the eyes of the LORD and provoking him to anger.” (2 Kings 21:2-6)

A spell caster will try to entice us with words, attempting to bring hope into our lives through practices that do not please God

“For, uttering great swelling [words] of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error; promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.” (2 Peter 2:18-19)

Is our life not too precious to place in the hands of a spell caster?

And worse still… should our children pay the consequences of our actions?

“And Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did evil more than did the nations whom Jehovah destroyed before the children of Israel. And Jehovah spake to Manasseh, and to his people; but they gave no heed.” (2 Chronicles 33:9-10)

What will their end be?

“But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part [shall be] in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)

Are we involved in these practices? What must we do to leave them behind?

\1. Acknowledge the wrong

“For I know my transgressions; And my sin is ever before me.” (Psalms 51:3)

Do we consult a spell caster or consult the Lord?

\2. Confess

“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity did I not hide: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto Jehovah; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. [Selah” (Psalms 32:5)

Do we confess this wrongdoing to the Lord and long for his forgiveness?

\3. Lordship

“because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus [as] Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:” (Romans 10:9)

Do we accept Jesus as the guide of our lives (John 14:6)?

\4. Holiness

“Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am Jehovah your God. And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am Jehovah who sanctifieth you.” (Leviticus 20:7-8)

“Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:” (Hebrews 12:14)

Will we consult spell casters again? The Lord is not far away, as many have claimed.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

And he is waiting to hear us and respond… Remember:

“Call to me, and I will answer you…” (Jeremiah 33:3a)

A spell caster? No, thank you! We have no need to consult a spell caster!

“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits and unto the wizards, that chirp and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? on behalf of the living [should they seek] unto the dead?” (Isaiah 8:19)
