Slaves to social media?
4 min read, approximately

“Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Today, communication has gone from taking months or days to taking only moments. Social media has become a tool that allows us to interact with people anywhere in the world. But… have we considered how much time we waste on it? In the past, midday meant spending time with friends and interacting with them. Now it means preparing to log on to social media to see what others have done or written, spending hours looking at their photos… There are 24 hours in a day: we sleep for 6, work for 9, and spend the rest on social media—or, as if that were not enough, we mix it into those other hours. Did the Lord create us for this? The Word says:
“If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth. For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, [who is] our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also with him be manifested in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4)
We think: ‘Have they written to me? Have they posted a new photo yet?’ The Word says:
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
Yes, I know many will say: ‘What is wrong with looking at photos, reading messages, or just being… there? Besides, I am God’s friend on social media!’ We must remember that
“All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.” (1 Corinthians 10:23)
Where do we spend more time: in the Bible or at the keyboard? Where is our mind: on our heavenly Father or on social media? Has social media overcome us?
“promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.” (2 Peter 2:19)
“Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves [as] servants unto obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16)
Slaves to social media or a chosen people?
“For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1)
“But ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for [God’s] own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” (1 Peter 2:9)
Did we know that the Spirit grieves and weeps to see us spending more hours on social media than in the Bible?
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23-24)
