Matthew 20:25-27
“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Not so shall it be among you: but whosoever would become great among you shall be your minister; and whosoever would be first among you shall be your servant:”

Sometimes we hear the word ‘servant’ used constantly in churches… But do we know what this word means?
Perhaps we do, perhaps we do not.
According to the dictionary, a servant is a slave who is in the service of a master.

But God’s Word gives precise characteristics of a servant’s attitude. Let us read:

\1. Selfless

Willing to help wherever needed without looking for anything in return.

“So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:12-14)

\2. Humble

There is no arrogance. Quite the opposite… A servant recognizes their limitations and weaknesses, yet does not use them as an excuse to avoid rolling up their sleeves and saying, “Let’s get to work.”

“[doing] nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself; not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

\3. Becoming less

Not my way… The way the Lord wants.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

Now that we know 3 characteristics of a servant’s attitude… What will our service be like today?
