“But he abandoned the counsel the elders had given him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were in his service. He said to them: What do you advise us to answer these people who have said to me: Lighten the yoke your father placed upon us? Then the young men who had grown up with him answered: Say this to the people who told you: Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should lighten our burden. Tell them: My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. If my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with scorpions.” (2 Chronicles 10:8-11)

Every decision always has good or bad consequences. So, what is our source of advice?
The Lord, a friend, or simply the first person who tells us something?
Let us remember that whenever we reject God’s counsel for our lives, we end up facing problems whose damage we can rarely undo.

The Word teaches us that

“Keeping correction is the path to life, but whoever abandons reproof goes astray.” (Proverbs 10:17)

We must learn to keep instruction, and this is only possible by walking in the fear of the Lord

“And he said to humanity: Behold, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and turning away from evil is understanding.” (Job 28:28)

When we do not know what to do, it is wise to seek the Lord and, if possible, a fellow believer known for a good testimony and fear of the Lord, because

“Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth; But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14 ASV)

Now, if the advice is good, we should not merely hear it, but put it into practice

“Listen to counsel and receive correction, so that you may be wise in your old age.” (Proverbs 19:20)

This counsel and instruction must align with the Lord’s will, for we seek to please him alone

“For am I now seeking to persuade people or God? Or am I seeking to please people? Certainly, if I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)

Will we disregard God’s counsel, reject the advice that comes from God today, or accept it?

Do we seek God only when things go wrong?

A reflection on seeking God in every circumstance, asking for wisdom, and putting his Word into practice rather than turning to him only in difficulty.
