That was my last lifeline!

“Whom do I have in heaven but you? Apart from you, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever. For those who turn away from you will perish; you will destroy everyone who departs from you. But as for me, drawing near to God is good. I have placed my hope in the Lord GOD, so that I may tell of all your works.” (Psalms 73:25-28)

From a very young age, we build ‘pillars’ as lifelines in our lives: friends, our own parents, learning, and so on, until little by little we feel protected and think, ‘We are untouchable!’ We think that the more lifelines we have, the safer we are. Many of us have lots of friends so that we will not feel alone if one leaves us. We learn many things so that we can adapt and find our way. We maintain friendships so that when our children leave home, we will not feel lonely, and so on. But what happens when the unexpected comes and everything we considered firm and secure collapses before our eyes? Would we think at those moments, ‘Ah! My plans were wrong! I should not have placed my trust in this or that!’? If so… what would we place our trust in? Before answering, remember that everything in this life is fleeting and temporary…

“We do not look at the things that are seen, but at those that are unseen, for the things that are seen are temporary, but those that are unseen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)

. Returning to the passage, David understood that there was no safer ‘lifeline’ than placing his trust in God. We all know that David was pursued, and that King Saul wanted to kill him without cause (1 Samuel 19). Rather than thinking:

‘Why did I have to kill that giant? I was better off tending my father’s sheep!’ (1 Samuel 17:34)

, or:

‘Now I have an army. Saul, now we will see who is who!’ (1 Samuel 22:2)

, David simply understood that God is our unfailing companion, that God is the rock of our salvation, and that our life rests in him. If God has allowed something, then with even greater confidence we trust that he sustains us and will continue to do so! David trusted the Lord so much that, even when he was alone, he knew he was not forsaken… You who are going through a time when you feel all your lifelines have disappeared, when your life seems to have become chaos, when you ask yourself again and again, ‘What will I do? What will become of me now?’… I want to tell you that God has not abandoned you, that God is with you, that God is in control, and that God comforts you in these difficult times. Today is a day to stop seeking lifelines outside God. As David said, it is time to surrender yourself to the Lord, trust him, and declare:

“But as for me, drawing near to God is good. I have placed my hope in the Lord GOD, so that I may tell of all your works.” (Psalms 73:28)

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not lose heart, for I am your God who strengthens you. I will always help you; I will always uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

May God continue to bless you
and may you keep enjoying an excellent day in Christ Jesus!
