Are you in the pit of despair?
4 min read, approximately

“For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for Jehovah; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in Jehovah.” (Psalms 40:1-3)
The pit of despair… A pit: a deep hole, usually dug deep enough to reach groundwater. Despair: there is no hope left. Put these 2 words together and we get problems, crises, difficulties, uncertainty, and so on. These might be debts, problems, ‘My parents do not love me,’ ‘No one loves me,’ ‘I feel alone,’ discouragement, anguish, loneliness, a rebellious child, illness, infidelity, ‘I have not been able to study,’ ‘I think I will never achieve anything,’ and so on. If we tell a fellow believer about the pit of despair we are in, their answer, ‘I will pray for you,’ may not meet our expectations. That is because we want an immediate answer to our problems. We want a magic wand to solve them, but God’s Word says:
“These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
We must understand that:
“I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Yes, it is true! It is so difficult to understand these things when we are desperate… So: What must we do to get out of this pit? \1. In the midst of the pit, let us praise God:
“who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them; and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened; and every one’s bands were loosed.” (Acts 16:24-26)
\2. Let us have faith that God will do something:
“and without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing [unto him]; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that seek after him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
\3. In these situations, let us declare God’s Word:
“Every scripture inspired of God [is] also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
\4. Let us cry out to God to show us a way out of this pit of despair:
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and will show thee great things, and difficult, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
\5. Let us get to work:
“for it is God who worketh in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)
\6. Not in our own strength:
“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of Jehovah unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith Jehovah of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6)
Let us remember: ‘The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy…’ But Jesus Christ, who is with us, has:
“…come so that they may have life, and have it in abundance.” (John 10:10)
‘And he brought me up from the pit of despair…’
