“And Samuel said, Hath Jehovah as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)

Pay attention?

The Lord urges us to be quick to listen and understand what we are being told:

“Ye know [this], my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” (James 1:19)

Sadly, we interrupt more often than we should, and as a result the message is not so clear to us in the end:

“He that giveth answer before he heareth, It is folly and shame unto him.” (Proverbs 18:13)

Equipped not only to hear, but to listen… That is why paying attention is required!

Let us look at a few things we gain by paying attention:

  • Faith

“So belief [cometh] of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

  • Discipline and good advice

“A wise son [heareth] his father’s instruction; But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.” (Proverbs 13:1)

  • Sound judgment and wisdom

“Hear, [my] sons, the instruction of a father, And attend to know understanding: For I give you good doctrine; Forsake ye not my law. For I was a son unto my father, Tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. And he taught me, and said unto me: Let thy heart retain my words; Keep my commandments, and live;” (Proverbs 4:1-4)

  • Intimacy, discernment, and guidance

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28)

What are we hearing and listening to today?

“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15)
