How long will we keep sleeping?

Ephesians 5:14 (Sleeping)
“Therefore it says: Wake up, you who sleep, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you.”

In our daily lives we go through countless things, many of which aim to make us grow cold or lead us to ‘sleep’ until we become insensitive. Sadly, at that point we often lose sensitivity, believe we are right about everything, and think we are accepting God’s counsel when we are actually rejecting it. Let us look at these examples:

Sleeping until we experience a false sense of comfort?

“Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.” (Matthew 25:5-12)

Sleeping until we think we have the authority to complain against the Master?

“But Martha was cumbered about much serving; and she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. But the Lord answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things:” (Luke 10:40-41)

Sleeping until we think we are wiser than God, even despising his counsel?

“Then believed they his words; They sang his praise. They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert.” (Psalms 106:12-14)

‘Examine me, O God’

The question is: How is our spiritual life?

“Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8)

May we stop sleeping from today onward and:

“Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep [it], and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” (Revelation 3:2-3)
