Thinking about divorce, divorcing, or divorced?
5 min read, approximately

“And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful [for a man] to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said, Have ye not read, that he who made [them] from the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh? So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:3-6)
It is alarming and sad to see couples divorcing day after day. Lack of dialogue, boredom, intolerance, financial problems, not learning to yield and live together, and competition between husband and wife… Each couple has its reasons and treats them as pillars to cling to. Yet have we stopped to consider what the Lord says? At the wedding we want the Lord involved, but in the divorce we want him to stay on the sidelines?…
Let us see: how about answering the following questions in the light of God’s Word?
\1. What does God think of divorce?
“For I hate putting away, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, and him that covereth his garment with violence, saith Jehovah of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.” (Malachi 2:16)
\2. Who separates a married couple?
“He answered them: Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said: For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will be one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Matthew 19:3-6)
\3. But then why did Moses permit divorce?
“And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. But Jesus said unto them, For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of the creation, Male and female made he them. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh: so that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Mark 10:4-9)
\4. Then… does the Bible give any reason for divorce? What reason or reasons?
“He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.” (Matthew 19:8-9)
Otherwise,
“Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto.” (Galatians 3:15)
Children?
What will happen to this child’s emotional stability? “The child has become rebellious, makes no progress, cannot understand, does poorly at school, and cannot socialize”. Could it be that we see what we want to see and fail to realize that this affects and harms a child?
“For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.” (Galatians 6:8)
Are you still thinking about divorce? Will you continue the divorce process? Or will you become a couple who enters into the Lord’s restoration after divorce to reunite?
If you have already decided to consider, pursue, or remain in divorce, the Lord will respect that decision. However, if desire and longing remain, I remind you that nothing is impossible for the Lord, and your marriage is no exception.
Come, let us pray
“Lord, today I come to you to cry out for my marriage. You know everything we are going through, and as you know, I no longer know what to do. But I believe and know that you can do all things. I know you are almighty, that you are the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that you love us. Please, as one flesh, I place my life and my spouse’s life in your hands. I surrender control of our marriage, actions, thoughts, and decisions to you, so that you may guide them.
Please be the center of our home. Breathe life into us so that what we felt for each other may be renewed. Lord, renew our love. Please teach us to forgive, communicate, respect, and value each other.
We truly need your help, guidance, and support. We turn to you for aid and open the door of our home to you. Please come in and take your place, for we no longer want to walk without you. I believe; help my unbelief. Come in and set things in order.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.“
