“Once upon a time…” Fables or God's Word?

“I charge [thee] in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:1-4)

Throughout history, we have heard arguments raised against the knowledge of Christ, such as:
That Jesus’ body was found; that Jesus has already returned invisibly; that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had descendants; that a man is permitted to have several wives; that Mary ascended to heaven; that there are many paths besides Jesus Christ; that Christ’s atonement was incomplete; and so on…
Incredibly, although these and many more are NOT true (and the Bible does not mention them), many people follow them…

“My people were destroyed because they lacked knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6a)

“because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.” (Romans 1:21-23)

“I marvel that ye are so quickly removing from him that called you in the grace of Christ unto a different gospel; which is not another [gospel]: only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema. As we have said before, so say I now again, If any man preacheth unto you any gospel other than that which ye received, let him be anathema.” (Galatians 1:6-9)

Do you know? God’s Word:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And light unto my path.” (Psalms 119:105)

“…is living and effective, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates to divide soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

And all of it

“…is inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the person of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

That is why

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

Only then can we walk with integrity and clarity, as in daylight (Romans 13:13), because we will no longer walk in fables but will know

“…the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Be careful

This is a call to be careful:

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you beforehand. If therefore they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: Behold, he is in the inner chambers; believe [it] not. For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.” (Matthew 24:24-27)

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12)

That is why meditating on God’s Word and walking according to it is a daily way of life.

Do we live in fables or in God’s Word?
