Are We Really Like the Grass of the Field?

Isaiah 40:6-8 (ASV)
“The voice of one saying, Cry. And one said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the breath of Jehovah bloweth upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever.”

Routine and Busyness

It is good to have dreams, pleasant to pursue them, and a source of joy and happiness to see them fulfilled. Yet in our folly we begin a frantic race to achieve them, but sadly… without God.
We try again and again. Some attempts succeed and others do not, but we assume that is how life works, and that perhaps if we put in a little more effort next time, we will surely succeed!

The truth, however, is that we remain caught in the same ebb and flow of ordinary, routine life.
As if that were not enough, we begin looking at what others have done. When we see that we have not achieved the same, jealousy, envy, anger, and helplessness set in, and as always… Our parents, our family, society, the government are to blame… in other words, everyone—even God!

Like the Grass of the Field

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow…

“whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14 ASV)

In all this frantic activity, we fail to notice that our life is like the grass of the field… We are here today; tomorrow we may not be…

“He remembered that they were flesh, a breath that passes and does not return.” (Psalms 78:39)

We keep putting off our relationship with God

“For this is what the Lord says to the house of Israel: Seek me, and you will live.” (Amos 5:4)

Recommendations

That is why the Word says:

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come and the years arrive of which you say: I find no pleasure in them.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)

It is only in our later years that we tell the Lord we now have all the time in the world for him. But our vigor, strength, health… are no longer the same. That is when we finally stop our frantic race, reflect on the Lord, understand, and end up saying with Solomon:

“The conclusion of the whole matter, after all has been heard, is this: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of humanity.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

“Oh Lord! If only we had paid attention to your Word earlier…”

Will We Keep Letting Time Slip Away?

Let us hurry, for:

“There is still hope for everyone among the living, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” (Ecclesiastes 9:4)
