“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)

We have read this verse again and again, yet it means nothing other than thinking about and meditating on God’s own Word. Reading the Word and meditating on it brings benefits: we truly “no longer know God only by hearsay, but now our eyes see him”; it keeps the Lord’s promises in mind, and preaching to others becomes increasingly simple and practical. That brings us to these questions: How much do we know of the Bible? Do we know more of the Word than yesterday? Any new verse? The idea is not to consider ourselves invincible because of our repertoire of verses, but to reaffirm our dependence on the Lord, to recognize that every day of our lives we hunger and thirst for our Father and that our day would not be the same without him guiding our steps. The more of the Word we memorize, the more surely it will fill our thoughts! In a war, any soldier who does not prepare for battle and does not hold their shield and sword firmly will sooner or later fall in battle…

“not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil.” (1 Timothy 3:6)

In the same way, our preparation is in God’s Word, meditating on it day and night! “Oh, but I don’t have time!” Then let us buy headphones, download an audio Bible, and listen to it while commuting. Let us make time to meditate on, examine, and memorize God’s Word… So instead, let us ask: Do we long to read the Word? Do we meditate on it? Do we apply its teaching to our lives? Do I spread the Word? Let us remember: God’s Word transforms, purifies, and endures!

“Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from the heart fervently: having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which liveth and abideth. For, All flesh is as grass, And all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower falleth: But the word of the Lord abideth for ever. And this is the word of good tidings which was preached unto you.” (1 Peter 1:22-25)

What do you say? One more verse in our repertoire?
