Time and money?

“And he said, A certain man had two sons: and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of [thy] substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.” (Luke 15:11-13)
Everyone who works the land values even a single seed, knowing that it represents a future plant that will yield more seeds. But what about the person who eats the seed?
“There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; But a foolish man swalloweth it up.” (Proverbs 21:20)
God’s Word teaches us a great story about a man who had 2 sons. One day, one of them—the younger—decided to claim his inheritance, turn it into cash, go somewhere no one would tell him what to do, and squander all his money
“And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.” (Luke 15:14)
The Bible teaches us that thinking “we have more than enough” or “let us splurge today and replace it tomorrow” reflects ideas that are absurd, foolish, immature, and harmful to our finances
“Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4)
Forgetting this was exactly what happened to this man. He thought he had more than enough and could live his entire life on what he had. A serious mistake! He had already been blinded by the one who comes to “steal, kill, and destroy”
“in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn [upon them].” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
“The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding Shall rest in the assembly of the dead.” (Proverbs 21:16)
Wasting what has been earned through hard work, spending time in idleness, failing to restrain idle desires, and not saving, investing, or making productive use of time or money are common traits of squanderers.
Let us look at a few questions that rarely carry much weight in the minds of squanderers:
- Do we save?
“The ants are a people not strong, Yet they provide their food in the summer;” (Proverbs 30:25)
Anyway… Let us continue with the story
“Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?” (Proverbs 17:16)
For reflection
If we have been squandering money and time, today is a good day to stop, ask the Lord’s forgiveness for mismanaging what he has given us in his infinite mercy, and cry out for wisdom so that we can begin making clear plans to put our finances in order
“But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)
Let us no longer be among the families destroyed by neglecting this matter: finances.
Our place is with the King’s children, not with the idle. What do you say?
