Can we go on any longer? Do we need rest?
4 min read, approximately

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls; for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
Exhausted and tired?
There are days when we are so utterly exhausted that all we want to say is ‘Enough!’ We want to let everything go and rest. These are days when our mind, body, and memory do not respond properly… We only want all that weight that overwhelms and burdens us to disappear.
Rent to pay? Unemployed? Relationship problems? Trouble at work because of an unbearable boss? Children who do not listen? Health? Not enough money?… What is burdening and exhausting us?
Whatever the situation, God’s Word teaches us that if we have chosen to be among the courageous who have decided to win the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 11:12), then we are not among those who turn back to destruction, but among those who have faith (Hebrews 10:39)! So let us firmly place the following verses in our hearts, so that when situations arise that seek to burden and exhaust us, you and I can declare them in the name of Jesus:
\1. Do we need rest?
The Lord is so great that he gives us rest…
“The LORD is my shepherd; I will lack nothing. He will make me rest in green pastures; he will lead me beside restful waters.” (Psalms 23:1-2)
\2. Do we need repose?
The Lord is so good that he gives us pleasant sleep…
“It is in vain that you rise early and go late to rest, eating the bread of sorrows, for God gives sleep to his beloved.” (Psalms 127:2)
\3. Do we need calm?
The Lord has everything under control… We trust in him and receive his peace…
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me live securely.” (Psalms 4:8)
\4. Does anyone understand what we are going through and have the ability to help us?
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls; for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29-30)
\5. Do we feel alone?
God will never leave us alone… His presence will go with us day and night!…
“And he said: My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
\6. Do we not know how to ask God for help?
Let us be calm. God has given us his Holy Spirit (who dwells in us) precisely to intercede for us at these times!…
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to ask for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans beyond words.” (Romans 8:26)
And as the cherry on top,
\7. Are we waiting for someone to give us a hand?
Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?…
“Have you not known, have you not heard that the everlasting God is the LORD, who created the ends of the earth? He does not weary or grow faint, and no one can fathom his understanding. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of those who have none. Young people grow tired and weary, and young men falter and fall; but those who wait for the LORD will have renewed strength. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not grow faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)
